The holidays bring out the best in people. The streets are decorated and lit. Everyone is cheerful while out and about shopping for family and friends. People are in a giving mood. Shutterfly is not only busy making photo products as gifts for your loved ones around the world, the employees have caught the giving bug as well. I experienced this first hand during the Shutterfly Foundation Annual Holiday event.
Shutterfly has a foundation that believes in helping people share life’s joy in the communities where we live and work. It was started in 2006 and is run by a team of employee volunteers. The Shutterfly Foundation strengthens the connection to our local communities through grant donations and organizational assistance.
I joined the Foundation Team as soon as I was eligible and this year we reviewed over 300 grant applications and organized many volunteer events including blood drives, food banks, serving schools, helping build a community garden and our 4th annual Adopt-A-Family program. The Foundation’s main focus is to support organizations making a positive impact in our community through family wellness and youth education programs. The Adopt-A-Family program we participate in each year is a key component to this, as we are able to make an immediate impact on the lives of families in need during the holidays. Our Redwood City office has been participating in this program for the last three years and this year we were able to extend it to all five locations. Over 360 employees shopped for, wrapped and donated 475 gifts to 31 families across Redwood City, Sunnyvale, Charlotte, Tempe and Phoenix.
Each location had a tree lighting event where employees could choose an ornament with the Adopt-A-Family member’s information and suggested gift. The creative team in Redwood City participated as a group and bought gifts for a few different families. We purchased the gifts that were suggested, but the team went all out and got a few additional gifts for each person. We organized a wrapping day, so everyone could bring in their gifts and wrap them together. We then delivered stacks of presents to the collection room, which was completely filled wall-to-wall. It was nice to see the thoughtfulness and generosity in the people I work with everyday.
Wishing you and your family a Happy Holiday season and a Happy New Year.
