Birthday Photo Books

Hi everyone! I’m Kristin Austin of Paige Simple Studio [1] and I am so excited to be sharing an annual family birthday tradition with you!

THE HISTORY
My son, Chase, was born in 2011 and when I was planning his 1st birthday I wanted to start a special tradition that we could carry from year to year. In the age of digital photos it was important to me that his childhood memories didn’t get lost in a sea of files on our computer. So, I came up with the idea of annual year book that we would put together before each birthday and then display at his party for guests to look through and sign.

THE PROCESS
I create his year books using 12×12 hard cover photo books [2] from Shutterfly. Here are the covers of his 1st and 2nd books.

Before I piece together the books, I organize our photos in folders on my computer by month. His birthday is in June so his books contain photos from June through May of the previous year. For example, his first birthday was June 25, 2012 so his ‘1st Year’ Book contained photos of June 2011 through May 2012 and his ‘2nd Year’ Book contained photos of June 2012 through May 2013. Portions of the books are also set up similar to the way a school yearbook would be structured (sports pages, superlatives, and other traditional ‘yearbook’ elements). Oh, and I create the cover of the books to match the theme of his birthday party!

Guests are asked to sign his year books at each party. They absolutely LOVE looking through the books and leaving notes.

CHASE’S 2nd YEAR PHOTO BOOK

I started his 2nd Year Book with photos from his 1st birthday party and then proceeded to use photos from the months following. Here are some images of the book at his Preppy Tie themed 2nd birthday party.

Here are some sample spreads from this book.

I can’t wait to pass these photo books down to him some day! If you’re interested in reading more about his parties you can do so on my blog [3].
