Create a Halloween story

Guess what I’m thinking of? Orange pumpkin, black cat, crazy costumes, funny photo shoot… Halloween! In my family we start thinking about Halloween in August. Every year, we dress up as a family (or a neighborhood!) in theme, which of course takes some planning.

Crazy as it sounds, I try to envision our yearly Halloween photo book at the same time we are thinking about and discussing our costumes. What story will I tell, what approach will I take – let the pictures tell the story or add a lot of text? What shots will I need my mom to take (thanks Mom!)?

I’ve found that having this picture in my mind helps to capture the special moments I want us to remember during the hectic day. I’ve also found that letting my kids in on the “story” helps capture the moments, while at the same time getting them into character and allowing them enjoy the imaginative dress up experience even more.

Last year, our family (and a few friends) went as Star Wars. We had so much fun traveling to different “planets” and meeting the different creatures along the way. By the time we reached our main destination, even my then 2 year old little girl a.k.a. mini Darth Vadar wouldn’t break character.

Best of all, with the story in the photo book [1], the Halloween memories transcend the day and truly take on a life of their own. So try to think of a story ahead of time – and instead of hearing “Mummy, remember when I was Wendy?”, you may hear what I heard the other day. “Mummy, remember when we traveled to Neverland?”
