What my photo project is teaching me

On December 1, 2010 I started my Project 365, which means taking a photo a day for a year. I had heard of people doing these projects (like these examples in Shutterfly Gallery [1]), and it sounded kind of fun, but could I really manage a photo every day – for a year? I decided to take on the challenge.

DAY 12

First I set my goals:

1. I have to take a picture every day, no cheating
2. I can edit my images anyway I like
3. I don’t have to stick to an overall theme

DAY 41

Goals in place, I started my project. I was so excited! At first I thought to myself this is going to take forever, but then the pictures started adding up. I can hardly believe I am in my 6th month.

DAY 75

After the first month I noticed that I was branching out, taking pictures differently, editing too. I was learning and using new techniques. I believe this change came from having to be creative daily. I’m having real fun with it.

DAY 105

I will be making a book of my Project 365 in December and I am looking forward to seeing all the pictures come together in a photo book [2]. Plus I’m already thinking of a new project to start after that, like maybe a new 365 but with a theme: only people, only animals, only landscapes or even only collages.

DAY 148

I have already decided that I will do a 365 with my iPhone as well, because it’s super easy to upload the images straight to Shutterfly using the Shutterfly iPhone App [3]. The possibilities are limitless, and honestly this project is teaching me a lot about my camera and how to look at the world in different creative ways. I can’t wait to share my 365 photo book at the end of the year. I’ll keep you posted!

DAY 152
